Where does ‘Oktoberfest’ come from?
Because Crown Prince Ludwig of Munich was set to marry Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen of Saxony-Hildburghausen on 12th October 1810, the King sent invites to his people inviting them to attend the festivities in the city gates. In honor of the Princess, the fields in the city gates were named Theresienwiese, meaning, Theresa’s fields or much known by the locals as “Wies’n”.Thousands of people went as the invitation of the King spread. As a ceremonial closing of the event, horse races were added to the festival by the Royal family for the whole Bavaria. The tradition of repeating the festivities in the following year gave birth to the name ‘Oktoberfest’.In its decision to boost the agricultural state of the nation, in 1818, they added another show of horse races. This Agricultural Show was held every three years when in 1818, some of the visitors had their beers in some stands which quickly grew in number. This horse races, even though had a great part of the history are no longer held today. In the following years until 1896, the beer stands were replaced by big beer tents with big amounts of beers and were backed up by some owners of the brewery industry, which then celebrated each year since then, every October. Thus the festival, Oktoberfest.
